Gene Loves Jezebel

There’s a list of bands I want to see at least once in my lifetime — Gene Loves Jezebel is definitely on that list. The new wave+rock+gothic band is on a U.S. tour that brought them to The Middle East (upstairs) last night. Singer and guitarist Jay Aston owns the rock and roll squawk. They seemed to be having a lot of fun on a stage that is considerably smaller than where they played back in the day. And of course they ended the show with their big 1985 hit “Desire.” Charismatic is an understatement for this band.

Shaun Wolf Wortis and Suzi Lee brought their 15th annual mardi gras ball to TT The Bear’s on Saturday, February 2nd. It’s definitely one of the most fun rock shows to photograph. Proceeds benefited the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. The night started off with performances by The Jelly Rollers and Corn Mo. (Go to the video page on Corn Mo’s site and watch “By.”) Then Shaun, Suzi and their cohorts in The Vudu Krewe All-Star Mardi Gras Band played through the night while a cast of local Boston rock characters joined for a song or two. Guests included John Powhida, Holly Brewer (HUMANWINE), Chris Mascara, Peter Moore (Count Zero), Jordan Valentine (World’s Greatest Sinners) and Bo Barringer (Me and Joan Collins). Two of the Boston Babydolls entertained the crowd with burlesque dancing.

The twenty guys in Bang Camaro have come a long way since I saw them at their first show at the Paradise Rock Club (opening for Bleu) the Summer of 2006. Tuesday night they headlined a show at the Middle East Downstairs along with The SnowLeopards and Lansdowne. Bang Camaro is about to embark on an epic journey around the country throughout February and part of March. Check out the tour schedule on their website and tell your friends in cities where the band is stopping in to check out the rock and roll spectacle that is Bang Camaro.

After the show at the Middle East, I zoomed over to the Lizard Lounge to catch the end of Session Americana’s latest installment of their winter residency. Chris Pappas from The Every Day Visuals and Ward Hayden from Girls Guns & Glory both joined them for a few songs.
