The Raveonettes at the Paradise Rock Club on Thursday, January 15th
January 3, 2009 by Jay Derrico
English is a good language because you can make up words by combining existing ones. Denmark’s The Raveonettes know this: their stage name is a combination of Phil Spector’s darlings The Ronettes, and Buddy Holly’s jam “Rave On”. This wordplay reflects The Raveonettes’ ability to cut up vintage American rock sounds, and twist them into their own dark and detached riff rock. This stuff is clearly more “White Light/White Heat” than “Be My Baby”, but they don’t forget to bring the fuzzbox and reverb along with the attitude.
Check out The Raveonettes at the Paradise Rock Club on Thursday, January 15th. Doors: 8pm. Tickets: $16.50 (Buy tickets online or go to the Paradise Box Office at 967 Commonwealth Avenue on the MBTA Green Line’s “B” train). Ages: 18+. Also playing that night is Nickel Eye, the folk rock side project of The Strokes’ bassist Nikolai Fraiture.

Live Video of The Raveonettes at the SXSW Music Festival
Check out this video of The Raveonettes performming “Dead Sound” at the 2007 SXSW Music Festival in Austin. They’re almost too cool for smiles; but watch the drummer crack one at 2:34, just before she begins the buildup that launches a beautiful guitar squall on the audience. Also, playing the drums while standing tells you they aren’t messing around. Watch more videos on The Raveonette’s website.
